Would like to become a good driver – or if you’re a good driver, become better still? Many people think way too much about how they can pass their driving test without considering the most important question, how can I become a good and safe driver for the rest of my life?

When you become a good driver, you save lives, but when you pass your practical test only because you want to get your drivers licence, you have the potential to become a mediocre driver and hurt lives in future.

How to Become a Good Driver and Pass your Driving Test

To become a good driver the first thing you need to do is to find a good driving instructor. By using a great driving instructor it will speed up the learning to drive the process. Great driving instructors are hard to come by, but they are out there. One of the best ways to find a good driving instructor is to ask family and friends for their experiences with their instructor. If that doesn’t work then reviews on driving schools websites, On the reviews make sure you can see pictures of people not just their names and postcodes. A picture is as they say wort a thousand words.

Remember, as a great driver, you should always think about road safety first.

You have got your Driving Instructor, What’s Next?

Now you have a great driving instructor, it’s important to use them in the most efficient way. By this I mean you should get a plan in place for ALL your driving lessons. Structured lessons help to learn to drive the process. I would suggest doing at least 4 hours a week minimum or more if you have the time. Lessons should be at least 2 hours long, this gives you time to take in all the information and gives you time to practice practice practice. Always ask questions of your driving instructor about what you are been taught. The more questions you ask the quicker you will learn. So don’t be a passive learner and NEVER EVER be afraid to ask. There is no such thing as a stupid question, only stupid answers.

Not Passed The Theory Test?

If you have not yet passed your theory test then this is the most important thing to get passed as soon as possible.
As you will be able to see on our website, we have all the latest DVSA questions and hazard perception clips and much much more. Here is a link to all our latest resources.
It takes around 15 hours of studying of our resources to get up to the theory test standard. There is a lot to learn, the more you learn for our resources the less driving lessons you will need. So what are you waiting for? Get studying.
Only when the theory test is passed can you book a practical driving test. The theory test once passed is valid for 2 years.

Driving Lessons

As I mentioned above it’s important to have structure. All lessons must be planned out. Your driving instructor, whether from a driving school or an independent driving instructor, should let you know what you will be doing in your next lesson. This will give you a chance to do a bit of homework. No, I don’t mean you should get in a car on your own. I mean you should get on google and or YOUTUBE and do a bit of research on your upcoming driving lesson. Also, ask your instructor to give you feedback on your driving lesson at the end of your lesson. Good feedback as well as bad feedback. You need to hear both. Trust your driving instructor. She or He is there to help you. Good feedback from your driving lessons will help confidence and feedback on the stuff you are not good at will help you improve. Always put a lot of time into the things you are not that confident at. It’s a bit of a waste of time practising the things you are great at.

Driving Test Day

Now your driving test date has come around and you will be feeling nervous (you are human after all). Have you asked yourself this question? Why do so many people fail to pass their driving test the first time? Did you know only 47% of people pass their driving test the first time?

Follow this link if you want to pass your driving test the first time: Why People Fail The Driving Test.

The first thing to check is that you have your provisional driving licence with you on the day of your driving test ( No provisional licence with you on the day of your driving test means NO driving test ).
Stay focused on what you have learnt on your driving lessons, Don’t worry too much about your driving examiner. They are not there to fail you. The only person who can fail you is YOU.

After doing all the hard work on your driving lessons I think you will be pleasantly surprised how easy the actual driving test is. Just stay focused throughout your driving test. If you are unsure of what the driving examiner is asking you just ask them to repeat the directions. The driving test is not a route-finding exercise. All the driving examiners are looking for is a safe driver.
