Top 10 Tips for learing in Cambridge

Where is the best quietest place to start your lessons from?

The most suitable area to be around is King’s Hedges and Orchard Park, here is a good place to start as there are plenty of opportunities for starts and stops, gear changes, lefts and rights, with changes in priority, there are also quite a few mini roundabouts in the area as well.  It can get busy at school times and there are a couple of main roads in the area, you would need to be careful if you get on these too soon, but there are traffic lights that can be used to move from King’s Hedges to Orchard Park at the junction of Arbury Road and King’s Hedges Road.

What are the speed limits on the roads?

The areas consist of 30 mph and a lot of 20 mph speed limit with speed bumps, within a couple of miles there are also 40 mph and 60 mph national roads and 70 mph motorway (A14).

Are there many big or small roundabouts in my area?

There are a lot of mini-roundabouts within King’s Hedges and at various points a large roundabout as you approach any main junction with the A14, there are medium size roundabouts on most of the roads leading towards Cambridge town centre.

Are there any dual carriageways?

A14 is within easy reach as well as the M11 further afield.

What are the best times during the day to do your driving lessons?

Try to avoid the school rush and normal peak times as getting to and from this area during these times can sometimes be problematic, but if you are already there, should be ok.

Are there any busy/difficult/unusual junctions?

On Chesterton Road, where it joins with the A1134 and Victoria Ave there is a one way system that has caused problems, also where Victoria Road joins Huntingdon Road there is a complicated junction where you can turn on to Histon road, this is Traffic light controlled.  Histon Road could be a problem in the near future as there are going to be major road works to install a cycle path and there has been talk it will a temporary one way whilst under construction.

Are there any places to practice bay parking?

At the moment Cambridge North station seems popular, it’s usually not too busy and the markings are good and it’s flat, try and avoid the Milton Park and Ride as it is used for test purposes.

Which are my nearest theory test centres?

Theory Test Centre, Pearson Professional Centre, 2nd Floor, St Andrews House, 59 St. Andrews Street, Cambridge, CB2 3BZ

Where is my local practical test centre?

Practical Test Centre, Brookmount Court CB4 2QH, entrance on Kirkwood Road, off King’s Hedges Road.

Which is the easiest test centre to do your practical driving test in my area?

This is a reasonable Test Centre, there are a few problematic areas that you will need to explore, but it will help in the long run with your driving experience.  It allows you to cover a good deal of different road and traffic conditions within a fair distance.  Warning there are a great deal of cyclists within the Cambridge area and like some car and motorbike users they don’t all adhere to the rules of the road, pay special attention as they are very vulnerable.

There are so many fantastic things to see and do in Cambridge. Now is the time for you to get your driving licence and get out there to see them. We have local driving schools dotted all around the Cambridge area so you are never too far away to start your driving lessons.
